Pregnant twins is a hope for some women. What are the features and signs that you have twins pregnancy? What are the risks that can arise from this pregnancy? Check out the following explanation.
Pregnant twins indicates that a woman has two or more children in her womb. The children can come from the same egg (identical twins) or from different eggs (non-identical twins). Pregnant twins are more common in women in their 30s and 40s. Because at this time women will experience a cycle of ovulation that tends to be irregular, and allows the emergence of two egg follicles at the same time.
Signs of Pregnant Twins
Women who are pregnant with twins will need more intake of folic acid to help prevent birth defects. At the very least, you are advised to consume 1 milligram or 1000 micrograms of folic acid per day, if you are pregnant with twins. The following are some signs that you are pregnant with twins:- The main sign of a twin pregnancy is a larger stomach size in early pregnancy.
- Severe nausea and vomiting (morning sickness).
- Increased levels of the hCG hormone are higher than normal pregnancy. The hCG hormone is a hormone produced during pregnancy. However, this increase in hCG hormone does not absolutely indicate a twin pregnancy.
- More weight gain than a single pregnant woman.
- Extreme fatigue.
- Back pain that appears early.
- Fetal movements are more active in the second trimester and later.
Frequent Complications
Some pregnancies do have risks, however, conceiving twins can carry a greater risk than a single pregnancy. Here are some of the risks and complications that often occur in multiple pregnancies, including:Preeclampsia
Preeclampsia is a condition in pregnancy that is characterized by high blood pressure, the presence of protein in the urine after the 20th week of pregnancy, and sudden swelling in some members of the body (face, hands, feet, and eyes).
Gestational diabetes
Gestational diabetes is a form of diabetes during pregnancy where the body does not produce enough insulin to regulate body sugar levels. About 2 to 5 percent of pregnant women have this type of diabetes. This condition is characterized by the presence of sugar in the urine, frequent thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, nausea, blurred vision, and frequent vaginal and bladder infections.
Anemia
All expectant mothers can experience anemia, which causes pregnant women to feel weak and lethargic. This is because in pregnancy, the amount of blood flowing in the body system becomes more and more thin. If this condition becomes severe and is not treated immediately, it can increase the risk of preterm birth.
Twin To Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS)
This complication occurs in about 15 percent of twin pregnancies. TTTS is a disorder that afflicts identical twins, because identical twins can get blood supply from the same placenta. At TTTS, one baby gets excess blood flow while the other baby has a lack of blood flow. As a result, babies who get excess blood flow can run the risk of heart problems, while infants who lack blood flow can experience anemia and low birth weight.
